July 2, 2009 - some wahoo and dorado

wahoo-pirate-2-small.jpg

We went out yesterday on the Disco Pirate with Captain RJ for a 1/2 day at the “26″ rock and caught a handfull of 15 pound mahi mahi and a nice wahoo.  We had several good wahoo bites and lost a nice lure before we switched over to wire leaders.

July 1st, 2009 - a few big yellowfin tuna

It’s July and in the past that has meant one of our best yellowfin tuna months out of the Los Suenos Marina.  One of my best fishing days ever was a July 4th…we caught 20 yellowfin tuna…one 20 pounder, one 200 pounder and the rest were all about 100 pounds.  I caught a 100 pound tuna on my 20 pound spinning rod while casting a brand new cedar plug into a school of spinner dolfin.  It took 45 minutes to land and that fish ruined my reel and broke a brand new cedar plug in 2 pieces.

The tuna schools come and go from now until January…and we are anxiously awaiting a good tuna bite.

The guys on the 42′ Maverick caught a few big tuna offshore last week.  The fish were in the 80-120 pound range…we all hope that a sign of things to come.  They also picked up a couple marlin and sailfish last week.

The guys on the 32′ Irwin Forbes have been out several days this past week and report a scattered sailfish and mahi mahi bite around the 26 and the corner.

The guys on the 33′ Proline took a guy and his son out over the weekend and they caught a handful of mahi mahi with one over 30 pounds, they caught a handful of jack bottomfishing at the 26 rock and they raised a nice blue marlin in the 300 pound range.

My friends and I have been going out on the Disco Pirate and catching good numbers of roosterfish and jack doing some inshore fishing close to the marina.  The fish are all in the 25-35 pound range.

How time flies.

I can’t believe it’s almost July already and my friends and I are talking about 4th of July picnics and where we can get fireworks in Costa Rica.

The weather the past few weeks has been decent.  We have had a few daytime showers but for the most part it has only been raining in the evening.  the days have been mostly sunny and 85 degrees with a light breeze.

Things continue to be a little slow around the charter dock.  There have only been a handful of boats going out each day…some going offshore but most seem to be fishing inshore and down at the 26 rock.

The small dorado are starting to show up in good numbers and these are fun because you usually can catch  20 or 30 in a couple hours.  Ultra Light tackle, fly rods and hand lines are the best way to fish for these.  Most of these mahi mahi have been 10 pounds but a few guys reported some bigger fish to 20 pounds.

The sailfish and marlin bite has been scattered but most boats are still getting 2-4 fish on a full day offshore.

There have been a couple reports of yellowfin tuna but we are still waiting on the big schools to move in and there have been some wahoo caught at the 26 rock.

The roosterfish seem to have been the main target the past few weeks and almost everyone is getting 2-4 roosterfish on a half day trip.  One lucky guy on the 36′ Topaz caught a 75 plus pound roosterfish over by Negritas.

Howdy from Costa Rica,

Sorry for the lack of reports the past few weeks but I have been working on the boat during the day and have been lazy at night plus there has not been many boats going out the past few weeks so there has not been much to report.

The weather has been nice, 85 degrees, partly sunny days with a nice breeze and some evening showers.

The fishing offshore has been hit or miss.  A slow day has been 1 or 2 sailfish and a mahi mahi or two.  A good day is 5 or 6 sailfish or maybe a marlin and some mahi mahi.

I heard Captain Glen on the 36′ Glastek picked up a couple marlin from a log offshore.  That’s the great thing about rainy season fishing…if you come across the right log or trash line you can have a great day of fishing.

The guys on the 32′ Maverick caught a 450# black marlin pulling live bait down by the “26″ rock.  The “26″ always seems to hold some nice black marlin if you have the patience.

I have been getting my boat ready for charters and doing lots of fun fishing out front of Los Suenos and we always catch roosterfish, snapper, grouper, jack, bonita and more…nothing very big but some fun light tackle action with cold beers and some friends.

May 18, 2009 - sailfish bite good Los Suenos

sail-horn-may-crop.jpg

The fishing the first two weeks of May out of the Los Suenos Marina has been above average.  The sailfish bite has been steady in the normal hotspots and If the boats find a log or a good trash line they are catching mahi mahi, marlin and tuna.

I went out on Friday with some friends from Texas and we caught 10 sailfish before 1 pm and then spent the next few hours looking for logs and current lines.  We did find a couple good logs and we caught some small tuna and skip jack for live bait but the logs were not holding any mahi or marlin.

Captain Dana took a bachelor party out for a day offshore and they caught 6 sailfish and a nice blue marlin.

Captain James found a nice log and caught a bunch of 40 plus pound mahi mahi as well as a few sailfish off the log.

Captain Daniel found a nice log and caught 3 blue marlin…they caught some sailfish and mahi but when you catch 3 marlin in one day not many captains will care what else they caught.

April 28, 2009 - hot sailfish bite rumors

I talked to a couple guys tonight that told me the sailfish bite was off the hook in front of Los Suenos.  The bite was 30 plus miles to west with guys getting a chance at 30-50 sailfish per day.

April 28, 2009

 fl020023.jpg

The fishing the past couple weeks on the central Pacific has been a little above the average for late April.

Captain Bill reports some big marlin, some sailfish and some nice mahi mahi lately.

Captain Jeremy went out to the corner last Friday and went 6 for 11 on sailfish.  Captain Jeremy went out on the big boat a couple days later and released 5 sailfish and a nice marlin.

The guys in Quepos have been catching some sailfish, mahi mahi and a few marlin.  The run to the bite has been 35-45 miles offshore so you need a full day and a fast boat to get to the bite.

The above photo was sent by the guys on the Frenzy in Quepos…a very cool sailfish photo.

April 27, 2009

Hola,

I want to apologize for the lack of reports this month.  I have spent most of the past 6 weeks back home in Omaha, Nebraska with my family.  My Mom has been fighting cancer for 8 years and her fight ended on Friday night very peacefully in her sleep.  I want to thank everyone that sent emails and called with prayers and support.

My Mom raised 5 kids, took care of my Dad and worked full time as a nurse for as long as I can remember.  Even after being diagnosed with cancer and even when she going through chemotherapy she continued to do volunteer work at the local hospitals.  She never complained, she never gave up and she never ask “why me”.  She carried on with dignity and grace just as she did her entire life.

I think the true measure of good life is how many people you have helped along the way.  Hundreds and hundreds of people continue to offer prayers and support to our family and are truley thankful for the impact my Mom had on their lives.  Mom was a great role model in life and in her death.

There will never be a street named after her and there won’t be a big story in the newspaper about her but to the people that knew her she was a true hero in every sense of the word.

Thanks again.

April 12, 2009

I’ve had a couple groups out the past few days and they have had some good fishing.

The Omar group fished with Brandon one day and caught a bunch of grouper and snapper and then the next day they went out with James and caught 11 sailfish and a couple mahi mahi.

The Percy group did a tarpon day trip with Eddie in Tortuguero and released 7 tarpon.

April 9, 2009 - average bite out of Los Suenos

dsc_02030001.jpg

Sorry for the lack of fishing reports this week but I have been in the states visiting my family.

The fishing in Costa Rica the past week has been about average for this time of year.  Most of the boats going offshore are reporting some green water in all our hot spots but they are still catching a handful of sailfish and mahi mahi.  There hasn’t been many marlin caught but they are still around.   The bottom fishing has been steady 5-15 miles out with good numbers of grouper and snapper being caught.

Captain James took a bachelor party offshore and caught a few sailfish and a 400 plus pound marlin.  The best man caught the big one and everyone was happy.  The photo above is a nice grouper Captain James caught recently doing some bottom fishing not far from the Los Suenos marina.

Captain Brandon took a couple guys and their kids out for some bottom fishing and caught 15-20 grouper and snapper 5 - 15 miles offshore.
