We have had a lot of calls about fishing this month and I wanted to share a story of what not to do when you charter.

I had a guy send me emails for a month…first he wanted charter info, then info on shared charters and then info on inland fishing.  I gladly responded to all of his emails and gave him the best options for his budget.

A couple days ago he sends me a email saying that he went fishing, got skunked and that Costa Rica fishing is all hype and the fishing in Costa Rica sucks and he is going to tell all his friends.  I ask him some questions like who did you fish with, how far out, full or half day.  It turned out he booked his trip through his hotel, he booked a half day on a crappy boat and they fished 15 miles out even though the bite is 25 miles out. The hotel he stayed at is very nice but they are not fishermen…they have 2 small paragraphs on their website dedicated to fishing.

I am still trying to figure out why he complained to me when I had absolutley nothing to do with his fishing trip.

Everyone and their brother tries to book charter boats in Costa Rica.  I am always amazed when people book a trip with someone who knows nothing about fishing and sometimes nothing about Costa Rica.

Here are some of the people you will find trying to sell fishing trips in Costa Rica..travel agents in the USA that have never been fishing, guys that don’t even live in Costa Rica, guys that don’t live at the beach, guys that don’t have a boat but still call themselves captain, guys that hang out in bars looking to find charter clients, real estate agents, hotel clerks, golf caddies, taxi drivers, condo owners, street vendors, waiters, bartenders, ATV tour operators and the list goes on.
