Costa Rica Fishing Reports

The past week has actually been pretty busy at the Los Suenos Marina considering it’s May.  I am even having troubles finding a good boat for the weekend.

The bite hasn’t changed much the past couple weeks.  The boats are averaging 2-3 Sailfish, a handful of Dorado and some Tuna.  I haven’t heard of many Marlin sightings.

Nancy with Maverick Sportfishing said they have been about at the average this week.  They did get a couple good Tuna days in and the clients boated a couple 50 pound Yellowfin…mmmmm suuushi.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” went 3 for 7 on Sailfish today and caught a half a dozen Mahi Mahi in the 20-30 pound range.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” went 1 for 3 on Sailfish and caught 3 nice Dorado…the largest was over 45 pounds.

Captain Dave on the “MissBehavin” went 3 for 4 on Sailfish and caught 2 nice Mahi Mahi.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” released 3 Sailfish and kept 3 Dorado.

The fishing out of the Los Suenos Marina for the past week has been pretty average.  Not many boats have been going out so reports are few and far between.  The boats that have been going out have caught a few fish.  The average seems to be 2 or 3 Sailfish per boat and a few Mahi Mahi….there were some Tuna caught and one or two Marlin.   I have not talked to anyone that was skunked.

Captain Brandon took the boss out and released 4 Sailfish.

Captain RJ on the “Tres Amigos” caught 7 Sailfish and a couple Dorado.

The guys on the “Dream 2″ caught a big big Yellowfin Tuna…rumored over 200 pounds.

Captain Kevin on the “Hoo’s Up” caught 2 Sailfish and 2 Mahi Mahi.

Captain Jorge on the “J-Barilette” caught 4 nice Mahi Mahi’s.

The inshore bite has been hit or miss.  Dan from Jaco went a half day and caught 4 Rooster.  RJ fished all over during a recent half day and got skunked.  RJ said it was a like a “ghost town”.

I’m sorry for the lack of reports the past few days but I have a new laptop and I have had some “technical difficulties”.

There has not been much as far fishing to write about the past 3 or 4 days.  The good news is nobody is getting skunked.   There are not many boats going out but those that do seem to be averaging 2 or 3 Sailfish and a few Mahi Mahi.   There have been a couple Marlin sightings and one boat reported a few 20 pound Yellowfin.   Most of the boats are fishing 25-30 miles out.

The inshore bite has been decent.   I talked to a couple guys that caught 3 or 4 Roosterfish on half day trips this week.

I was having a beer with Captain Kevin from the “Hoo’s up” and going through his fishing logs for 2008.   He fished offshore 70 days total since January 1st.  In that time he caught 238 Sailfish, 32 Marlin and 86 Dorado.   He fished 15 additional days inshore but didn’t keep track of his fish.

The fishing the past few days has been fair. Not many boats have been going out but those that do are catching some fish. Most of the boats I talked to caught 2 or 3 Sailfish and a few Mahi Mahi. Nobody is getting skunked at least.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” went 5 for 7 on Sailfish and added a nice Mahi Mahi.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” went 2 for 4 on Sailfish and bagged a 50 plus pound Mahi. He said the 4 guys had a great time going through 48 beers and a bottle of Rum….good thing they took a taxi home.

Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” had a couple decent days catching 4 Dorado and 4 Roosterfish yesterday. Today they caught a bunch of Dorado in the 20 pound range and missed a striped Marlin.

The fishing the past few days has been nice mixed bag.  The Sailfish bite has slowed a little but everything else has picked up.  The Marlin bite is good for both Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin.  The Yellowfin Tuna bite has picked up with lots of boats reporting a few 30 pound fish.  The Dorado bite has also been good…with some big ones reported.

Most of the boats were fishing 25-30 miles out around the craters.

Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” Caught 2 Sailfish, a Striped Marlin a few Tuna and a Dorado.

Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and three 50 pound Dorados.

Captain Dana on the “Hoos your Daddy” caught a Sailfish, a Blue Marlin, several Yellowfin and a couple Dorado.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a half day trip about 15 miles out and caught 4 Dorado…a couple 30 pounds and a couple 20 pounds.

The Sailfish numbers out of the Los Suenos Marina have been just average the past few days. Boats are fishing 25-30 miles offshore and picking up 3 or 4 Sailfish and a Mahi Mahi or two. The Marlin bite picked up for a couple days out by the craters but it then slowed.

Captain Jorge on the “Barrilata” did a inshore 1/2 day trip yesterday and caught 2 nice Roosterfish. He said there was bait around the rocks but they could only manage a couple Roosters.

Captain RJ on the “Predator” has a brand new engine and did a half day trip yesterday and went 2 for 3 on Sailfish and caught a 20 pound Dorado.

Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your daddy” was rumored to have caught a Marlin yesterday and today….more details to come.

Captain Carlos on the “R&J” had a a great day on Wednesday with 4 Sailfish, a Stripe Marlin, a Blue Marlin, a Yellowfin Tuna and a Dorado….That’s a super slam in CR I think.   Then today they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado….they were fishing out by the craters.
