Costa Rica tuna fishing

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The Costa Rica tuna fishing should be steady until mid January.  The past couple weeks there has been a big school of tuna within range of the charter boats in the Los Suenos Marina near Jaco Beach and there have been some nice fish caught.

Here are a couple pics from some guys that recently fishing inshore on the 36′ express.  The captain of the 36′ is an American guy and he has been here 20 plus years and knows lots of honey holes.   He’s a blast to fish with and his wife makes some of the best lunches around.

There are some good deals on condos at the Los Suenos resort.  This is a 3 bed Del Mar condo with bay and golf course view.   It’s a ground floor unit with a big swimming pool just steps away.  $300 per night and that includes taxes.

September 6, 2010 – wahoo and the missing tuna

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

There has been a school of yellowfin tuna about 30 miles offshore the past couple weeks and the charter guys have been catching good numbers of tuna…most in the 40 to 60 pound range but there have been some big ones caught as well.  The guys that went out today couldn’t find the tuna.

The 28′ center console went out and caught a small blue marlin and a couple sails…he said the water was green and they were 35 miles out.  He heard blue water was about 45 miles out.

Some of my buddies fished the 26 rock for a half day and caught a handful of nice wahoo in the 25 to 35 pound range.

I’ll be moving at the end of the month to a house right next to the Los Suenos resort and I can’t wait.  I now live about 45 minutes from Los Suenos…so I spend a lot of time driving and a lot of money on gas.   My new house is 5 minutes from everything…my boat, the tackles stores, the bank, the best grocery store, the beach, the golf driving range, a free lap pool and workout room.   I’ll be able to park my gas guzzling bronco in the garage and ride my ATV instead. Life just got easier.

A couple lazy days, college football, cold beers and good food…happy labor day from Costa Rica.

September 4, 2010 – sailfish, tuna and wahoo

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

The fishing the last couple days remains unchanged…not great but not bad either.  Everyone I talked to haad been catching some sailfish and some yellowfin tuna.

One of the 42′ customs caught a big yellowfin tuna the other day…I heard it was 250 pounds.

Another 42′ custom took a group out today and fished offshore 30 plus miles and they caught 3 sailfish, a couple wahoo and a dozen yellowfin tuna in a the 30 to 40 pound range.  This is the feedback from the angler…“Jerry, awsome trip!  Great skipper and crew.  We caught numerous sailfish, wahoo and tuna.  Perfect day.  Thanks for setting us up”

Costa Rica sport fishing guarantee

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

There are some operators out there and some clients that ask for a guarantee “catch fish or your trip is free”.

When I hear about that I am reminded of the movie Tommy Boy when Chris Farley basically says I can take a dump in a box and guarantee you it’s a piece of s***.

When I first moved down here there was a tarpon guide that offered a catch a tarpon or get a free trip.  Well we went, didn’t catch a tarpon and the captain said ok I guess we owe you a free trip.  That was the last I ever heard from him.  Over the course of the next year I sent a half dozen emails and left a few phone messages.  I didn’t even ask for a free trip..I just ask for a good price when the fishing was good and he wasn’t busy.

Recently there was a guy down here offering “catch a marlin or your trip is free”.  He had found a honey hole and had been catching marlin consistently.  He had a group come down and they didn’t catch an marlin and they wanted their money back.  I wasn’t involved in this deal at all…I didn’t get a commission from anyone, I didn’t recommend anyone but for some reason I started getting included in their emails back and forth.

Long story short they wanted a refund, there was some fine print in the deal, they were denied a refund and they were not happy with their Costa Rica sport fishing trip.  The anglers were upset with the captain, the captain was upset with the anglers…it was a bad deal for everyone involved.   The anglers should have read the details more clearly and the captain probably should have given them a discount of some sort despite the fine print.

If something sounds to good to be true…IT IS.

We guarantee the best boat for your budget and time frame.  A safe boat with quality tackle and a captain and crew that will do everything they can to catch you fish.

September 2, 2010 – Costa Rica tuna and sailfish

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The sport fishing out of the Los Suenos marina near Jaco has been steady the past couple days.  Not many guys going out but everyone is still catching fish.  The 28′ just got back from a full day offshore and they caught 6 yellowfin tuna in thye 40 pound range and went 1 for 2 on sailfish.  The captain told me they were 30 miles out and the ocean was calm.

It’s so nice to see some college football on TV…the game is being broadcast in Spanish but Southern Miss v. South Carolina is on cable TV down here and it’s a beautiful thing.

Bachelor party Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a great place for a bachelor party and Jaco Beach on the central Pacific coast is the most popular spot for a good bachelor party.  We have warm weather, great fishing, golf, ATV tours, canopy tours, casinos and more.

We’ve been here 10 plus years and we do a handful of bachelor parties every year…sometimes it is 3 or 4 guys and sometimes it’s 20 plus guys.   We have done several bachelor parties for our friends that took the leap down here (see above pic) and we have also done a bachelorette party…the girls were crazier than the guys.

Visit Costa Rica and party and play like rock stars.

 rooster-mac.jpg

Only a few reports here and there for the past couple days out of the Los Suenos marina.  The sport fishing is not great but it’s not bad either.

Offshore there have been some small blue marlin around, some nice yellowfin tuna over 100 pounds, some pods of sailfish and some small mahi mahi…30 plus miles out.

Near shore there has been been a good wahoo bite down by the 26 rock…there are also some jacks, tuna macs and mullet snappers around.

Inshore boats have been getting a couple roosters on half day trips.  If you really want a rooster you should go full day so you can get to the more remote spots with less fishing pressure.

The fish above was caught on a 28′ center console a few months back.  The guy went for a full day and caught only one fish…but it was a big un.  I have been here 10 plus years and that is one of the biggest rooster I have seen…you can tell by the lips.
