October 12, 2010 – moving day

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Although I have been moving bit by bit the past week today is actually moving day and hopefully the first night in my new casa.  My land line has been shut off already and I may or may have internet connection for the next 48 hours.  So if I am slow to respond or difficult to contact it’s because of the move and I will get back to you asap.

The sun is shining, there is lots of blue sky and we didn’t get any rain last night…beautiful weather for October.

Costa Rica fly fishing

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Today was sunny and nice all day and unfortunatley I spent it moving from one house to another.

The 42′ custom out of Los Suenos went offshore for some fly fishing.  They had one angler on board and he caught a tuna, a mahi and 2 sailfish on the fly.  He also caught a sail and some tuna on conventional and spinning tackle.

October 10, 2010 – mahi mahi show up offshore

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

The weather around the Los Suenos area has been good…we are seeing the sun during the day and have had some light showers in the evening…no more all day rains like we had last week.

My buddy went out on his private boat yesterday and ran into the big schools of small mahi mahi just 15 miles offshore.  He said the first current line was loaded with mahi… “all you want” in his words.  The mahi usually show up the same time football starts so they are a little late this year but still a good sign.  If the little mahi are out there so are the marlin and sails.

The above mahi was caught by a group that went out recently on the 42′ custom.  The mahi mahi showing up along the current lines are the smaller 10 to 15 pounders.  They are fun on light tackle, fly tackle and hand lines and there are days were you can catch 100 per day if you really wanted to.

October 8, 2010 – sunshine and share charter

Friday, October 8th, 2010

It’s a good day in CR…Fridays are always nice, the sun is shining and the Nebraska Huskers beat up on K State last night.  Unfortunately I had to watch it on the internet because they had baseball and soccer on espn.  We never get any Thursday night college football.

I am in the process of moving to a new house this weekend that’s about 5 minutes from the Los Suenos Marina and my boat…I can’t wait.  Moving sucks but being 5 minutes from the boats, the tackle shop, the grocery store, the bank and the golf course is going to be great.  I plan on parking my truck and using my atv to run all my errands.

The owner of the 42′ Custom in Los Suenos sent me an email today and he is offering a share trip for next Tuesday (Oct  12) for $350 per angler.  He has one guy going and has room for 3 more.   This is one of my favorite boats in the charter dock…fast, comfortable, great tackle, AC but the best thing is the captain and crew.  I have fished with these guys dozens of times and they are one of the best teams in the charter dock…check the link below and see what other have said.

The captain of the 26′ in Quepos sent this pic in…he caught several marlin the last week of Sept before the rains started.

October 6, 2010 – Los Suenos fishing

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Not many boats out fishing but the 42′ custom went offshore yesterday and the day before…they said the first day was pretty rough but they did go 2 for 3 on sailfish and they added a mahi mahi.  Yesterday the weather and water was better..the went 3 for 4 on sailfish, they caught a mahi and a striped marlin.

October 5, 2010 – tarpon and snook fishing in Costa Rica

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

The Pacific side of Costa Rica seems to be recovering from a week of crappy weather…it’s raining less and we are seeing more sun…at least where I am.

The reports from the Caribbean side have been really good..the weather has been steady, the ocean has been calm and there are lots of tarpon around.  It seems like anglers are averaging 5 or 6 tarpon per day from the reports I received.

The pic above was sent by a guy that does some kayak fishing charters in Guanacaste.  He went over to the Caribbean side and has been shore fishing with light tackle and jigs for a few weeks. He’s been catching snook, jack and a few 80 pound tarpon from shore.

new skype and magicjack info

Monday, October 4th, 2010

For years I have tried to find a good carrier for my 1-800-9SAILFISH phone number.  I have switched phone companies several times and they all provide terrible service at ridiculous prices.

In an effort to help keep cost down and improve call quality I have added a magic jack number and some skype info.

magicjack – 1-85-SAILFISH   this works like any other phone number from any phone

skype name – bubbacr   you can send me text message or call me with your skype

If you have trouble with the 800 number try one of the other options or send me an email and I will call you.  We are Mountain time in Costa Rica and our office hours are basically 8 am to 8 pm.

The marlin pic above was from the 38′ custom.

sport fishing Costa Rica

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Rainy all day yesterday but the sun is shining this morning.  The 38′ custom in Los Suenos went out sport fishing before the rain started a week ago and they released 3 marlin, 2 sailfish and they kept a nice big tuna.

Our usual rainy season day is sunny and nice until late afternoon and then we get some evening showers.  Every October we seem to get 7 to 10 days of non stop rain and no sunshine.  It’s usually mid October but last year it was late October.  I am hoping that this year it was early and this last week was our crappy weather week.  These rains mark the end of rainy season and it will be summer soon with sunny days, calm seas, cobalt blue water and good fishing.

October 3, 2010 – oh the rain

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Yesterday was sunny and nice all day and then today it started raining about 3pm and has been dumping cats and dogs ever since.  After a week of steady drizzle the ground has to be saturated and this heavy rain today is bound to cause some landslides along the central Pacific coast tonight.  San Jose in the center of the country has been hit worse than coast and flood videos are all you see on the local news.

Everyone in Costa Rica has tin roofs and when it rains hard like it is now the roar of the hard rain on the tin roofs is deafening.  I have the football game on and the volume at full and I still can’t hear the game.

The 60′ conv in Los Suenos went out yesterday and they fished 35 and said the water was green…they said a couple other boats were at 45 miles and it was still green.  The 60′ managed 1 sailfish and a small mah mahi.
