September 4, 2009 – Costa Rica fishing and whale watching

Things have been pretty quiet around the Los Suenos marina the past week.  There have not been many boats going out and the ones that have gone out have been doing inshore and bottom fishing.  The boats that did go offshore reported a scattered bite for sailfish, tuna, mahi mahi with 3 or 4 fish per day.  The boats that have been going inshore have been doing half day trips and picking up some roosterfish and the guys going bottom fishing have been getting some grouper, snapper, wahoo, small tuna and small mahi mahi.

We went out today and fished the “26” rock south of Jaco Beach.  We fished about 5 hours and ended the day with about a dozen yellowfin tuna in the 10 to 20 pound range.  I just ate a big plate of sashimi with soy and wasabi.

The highlight of the day had to be the whales.  It is whale season in Costa Rica and we saw several mother humpback whales with their babies.
