January 7, 2009 – sunny and hot in Costa Rica

Costa Rica will be 85 and sunny everyday from now until mid April…so for all my friends back home in the sub zero temps and blowing snow…come on down to Costa Rica.

The fishing the past couple days has remained steady.  All the bigger boats have been fishing 40 plus miles out past Cabo Blanco and catching sails, mahi, marlin and some smaller tuna.

Yesterday it was really rough once you got past the 30 mile mark…the north winds were blowing down from Papagayo.  Most of the boats moved into the crater area…25 or so miles out to get out of the chop.  The guys I talked to all did pretty good at the craters averaging 5 or 6 sailfish a piece and 3 or 4 mahi’s.  I also heard talk of a few smaller marlin.

The guys on the 28′ Center console fished at the corner…25 miles out with a couple friends and caught 3 sailfish and 6 mahi mahi.  They had so much fun they are going out again today.

A family that caught tarpon on the Caribbean side last week went out on the 46′ Guthrie in Quepos a couple days ago and caught 6 sailfish, a wahoo and a triple tail….sounds like a good trip.

It’s a good sign when we are catching fish at the craters and the corner. ..it means the fish are moving in closer at least for a while.
