January 13, 2010 – Costa Rica fishing tourney

The first leg of the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Series starts tomorrow so everyone is fishing and everyone is keeping tight lipped on what they are catching.  I heard there were 70 boats in this years event.

The ocean has started to calm down after a couple days with unusually strong winds.  The strong winds forced the majority of the boats to fish south the past few days so there is a lot of water that has not been pre fished for the tournament so that means anything can happen in this tournament.  Even the smaller boats with rookie fisherman have a chance at the big money if they are in the right place at the right time.

The guys I did talk to that are not fishing the tournament are averaging 5 sailfish a day and 2 or 3 mahi mahi.  They are fishing south and closer in so there are fewer blue and striped marlin around.  There are some big blacks down south.  Last month we raised two nice blacks fishing the 26 rock at the full moon.
