January Fish of the Month – Wahoo (Wahoo)

Wahoo can be a pleasant surprise anytime of the year. Not many fisherman target Wahoo, they are usually caught while fishing for something else. There are a few offshore rocks south of Jaco that consistently hold Wahoo (20 to 60 pounds) all year long.

Generally caught trolling near offshore rocks and structure 10-30 miles out. Wahoo will strike lures, spoons and ballyhoo rigs. If you are going to target Wahoo use wire leaders, fish with planers and downriggers and troll twice as fast as you normally would.

World Record: 155.51 lbs. - San Salvador, Bahamas
The fishing out of Los Sueños Marina was steady in December. The Marlin, Mahi-Mahi and Tuna bite were above average and the Sailfish bite was just average.

December Fishing Report

The World Billfish Series championship was held here the first week of December… 45 Marlin and 118 sailfish were released in the 3-day event. Congratulations to Jacó resident Mainor Oporto who was crowned Grand Champion of the year long event after releasing 17 Sailfish and 1 Striped Marlin on the last day of the contest.

Captain Jeremy on the "Hot Reels" recently went 3 for 5 on Sailfish and caught a dozen Mahi Mahi all over 30 pounds.

Captain Dave on the "Miss Behavin" caught a 70 pound Wahoo even after that Wahoo had cut off a $200 teaser.

Captain RJ on the "Predator" took some folks from Florida out recently and caught 5 nice Tuna, 3 big Dorado, a Wahoo, 2 Sailfish and they missed a 300 pound Black Marlin. Later that week RJ did get his Black Marlin when a 400 pounder bit on the shotgun rigged Hawaiian eye.

Captain Jeff "Vaps" on the “Contendress” caught a huge Goliath Grouper recently near the Los Sueños Marina. These are rare for the Pacific side. The fish was safely released to fight again and hopefully make little groupers.

Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” ended the year with a bang catching a Blue Marlin, a Black Marlin, several Tuna and a half dozen Dorado…nice day Timmy.

January Fish Forecast --

Expect more of the same for the charter boats in January.

The Marlin fishing will be above average with more Striped Marlin and smaller Blue Marlin being caught than normal. The Mahi-Mahi, Tuna and Wahoo bite will also be good in January.

The big question is when will the Sailfish show up and start biting…we all hope in January.

The charter boats out of Los Sueños are all starting to get booked up for high season. If you are traveling to Costa Rica in the next few months and are planning on fishing make sure you get a boat reserved...they may be hard to get.

Give me a call or send an email with your fish story for the next “Costa Rica Fishing Report”.
