Fish of the Month – Yellowfin Tuna (Atun Amarillo)
The Sailfish bite will stay hot and move in closer and more big Tuna will be caught in March than usual.
March is not normally known for being Tuna season but Yellowfin Tuna are caught throughout the year on the Central Pacific coast. It’s not uncommon to pick up a 100 plus pound Yellowfin when fishing for Sailfish.
Yellowfin will bite on the same lures and ballyhoo rigs that are used to catch Sailfish. Tuna are usually found feeding with Dolphins especially Spinner Dolphins. If you can find feeding dolphins you can target tuna with cedar plugs and deeper running trolling lures like the green machine. . Live bait is best for the big Tuna…get in front of the pack and drop your live bait down and hold on.
World Record: 141 lbs. 1 ounce Luanda, Angola (Atlantic)
221 lbs. Santa Cruz, Ecuador (Pacific)

Fish Report
In like a lamb and out like a lion is the best way to describe the fishing in February. The last 2 weeks of February the offshore bite finally turned on…as predicted. Lots of boats are catching fish.
The guys on the “Patricia” went out 40 miles recently and landed a 750 pound Blue Marlin. Good luck to crew of the “Patricia” wherever you end up.
Captain Dave and RJ on the “Predator” took a couple guys from Ocean City out and went 5 for 10 on Sails and caught 3 Yellowfin Tuna…one was 175 pounds. They dropped of a slab of Tuna for me and it was sushi time.
Captain Austin and the guys on the “Adios” went 7 for 15 on Sailfish, caught and release a Striped Marlin and landed 6 Dorado that were all over 30 pounds. It was a great day for the group from Charleston.
Give me a call or send an email with your fish story for the next “Costa Rica Fishing Report”.
