Whether you live here or are just visiting you should take advantage of our Tarpon fishing. Costa Rica has some of the best Tarpon fishing in the world. There are two hotspots for big Tarpon. The Rio Colorado on the Northern Caribbean Coast and the Rio San Juan that runs along the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The Rio Colorado has several popular fishing lodges that offer all inclusive trips. The Rio San Juan is a beautiful and remote area that is lightly fished…it’s almost like stepping back in time. Some of these lodges can be a bit pricey, but it’s a great experience in a beautiful and still unspoiled part of Central America.
World Record: 283 lbs. (tie) Sherbro Island, Seirra Leone and Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela
Fishing Report
The Sailfish and Dorado bite was better in June. The “red tide” cleared up and the water color is a little better. June is always a slow month for the Charter Boats but the boats that did get out averaged 4 or 5 fish per day. One of the best days went to Captain Jeremy…they went 11 for 20 on Sailfish.
Captain Dave on the “Miss Behavin” took a family from Kansas out and they caught 4 Sailfish and a couple nice Mahi-Mahi…the kids loved it.
Captain RJ on the “Predator” was bottom fishing at the “26 rock” using a couple split tail Black Tuna as bait. They were not having much luck so they decided to bring in the bait and try somewhere else. As the customer cranked the bait in, the line came tight and a 450 pound Black Marlin was soon rocketing toward the surface. The fish came up in front of the boat and after some tricky driving they were able to grab leader on the fish several times before she broke off.
July Fish Forecast -- July is always a mystery when it comes to fishing in Costa Rica. It can be great or it can stink. You can go out one day and catch 10 fish and the next day catch nada…but it’s still fishing and fishing is always better than working…so get out and fish.
