September Fish of the Month –– Marlin (Marlin))

September, October and November are normally
the best months for Marlin. But…big Blue, Black and Striped Marlin are always around and the boats that target them usually have some success. You may need to go a little farther and fish a little harder, but Marlin fishermen are familiar with that.

2007 has been an epic year for our Marlin Fishing. In the past it seemed like a Marlin was caught maybe once or twice a month, but this year they have been catching one or two Marlin a week. If catching a Marlin is on your “things to do before I die” list then now is a great time to give it a shot.

World Record: 1402 lbs. Vitoria, Brazil (Atlantic blue) - 1376 lbs. Kona, Hawaii (Pacific blue) – 1560 lbs. Cabo Blanco, Peru (Black Marlin)

Fishing Report

September was a traditional “rainy season” fishing month. Not many tourists so not many charter boats going out, but most of the boats that did go out had some good luck…including myself.

Many thanks to Captain Glen and the crew of the “Bethina” for helping me get my first Marlin. My 300 pound Blue Marlin pounced on a ballyhoo with circle hook and went deep before anyone got a good look at it. We all assumed it was a Sailfish since we had already caught 3 Sails in that same area. After a 15 minute fight the fish came up right under the boat. As she broke water we all realized it was a nice Marlin. Once she saw the boat she took off and “snowplowed” about 100 meters…almost in slow motion. I was using 30 pound line and 80 pound leader so I offered little resistance as she made her runs. It took another 10 or 15 minutes to get her back to the boat were we got a clean release without harming that beautiful fish. Thanks again “Bethina”, great boat, great music and a great crew.

Captain RJ on the “Predator” had a great half day trip recently at the “26 rock”. They caught 5 good sized Wahoo, 2 nice Yellowfin Tuna and a 500 plus pound Black Marlin.

Jaco fisherman Brett went out with me on the “Disco Pirate” for some fun fishing in my kayaks. Brett brought some live Mullet, so we fished out at the buoy in the middle of Herradura Bay. Brett paddled for just 5 minutes before getting bit and he then spent the next 45 minutes hooked up to something big under the kayak. The fish finally broke off before we had a chance to see it. Best guess is a big Roosterfish but at that spot it could have been several things.

October Fish Forecast -- October will be a traditional “rainy season” fishing month. A few boats a day will go out fishing and almost everyone will have some luck. The boats that go inshore will get catch Roosters, Jacks, Mackerel and more. The guys that go offshore will catch some smaller Dorado’s, a few Sails, some Tuna, and a Marlin or two.

Give me a call or send an email with your fish story for the next “Costa Rica Fishing Report”.
