December 6. 2009 – Costa Rica deep sea fishing

Monday, December 7th, 2009

We had some unusual north winds yesterday and that seems to have pushed in some green water offshore.  A couple boats went out to the craters and corner today and the mahi mahi bite is still good and billfish still a little slow.

The guys on the 32′ Irvin Forbes caught a handful of mahi mahi in the 30 pound range.  They also saw a couple sailfish but they still seem to be lazy after the full moon.

The guys on the 36′ Topaz push out to almost 40 miles and found a good log and ended the day with 20 mahi mahi in the 30 pound range and 2 sailfish.

December 4. 2009 – Los Suenos Marina fishing

My buddies and I went out for a half day fishing on the 32′ Irvin Forbes…we fished 25 miles offshore near the craters and caught a sailfish and a half dozen mahi mahi in the 30 pound range.  The fishing wasn’t hot and heavy but not bad for a half day.  It was hot and sunny with calm seas and cold beers.

December 3, 2009 – Costa Rica fishing

The fishing the past week out of Los Suenos seems to be on a upswing.

A couple of the 42′ went out past 35 miles and one boat caught a marlin, 8 sailfish, 3 mahi mahi and a 150 pound tuna.  The other 42′ caught a marlin, 5 sailfish, 7 mahi mahi and 3 nice tuna.

The guys on the 38′ custom went 30 miles out yesterday and caught a dozen nice mahi mahi in the 40 pound range and 2 sailfish.

The fish are out there…they are just a little out of range for some of the smaller charter boats.  As the weather and water improves they should start moving in.

I talked to captains up and down the coast this week and everyone is waiting on the billfish…it shouldn’t be long now.

The photos above are from a group last week that fished Quepos one day and Los Suenos one day.  They didn’t catch a bunch of fish but still had a great time. The bottom pic is great.
