July 1st, 2009 – a few big yellowfin tuna

It’s July and in the past that has meant one of our best yellowfin tuna months out of the Los Suenos Marina.  One of my best fishing days ever was a July 4th…we caught 20 yellowfin tuna…one 20 pounder, one 200 pounder and the rest were all about 100 pounds.  I caught a 100 pound tuna on my 20 pound spinning rod while casting a brand new cedar plug into a school of spinner dolfin.  It took 45 minutes to land and that fish ruined my reel and broke a brand new cedar plug in 2 pieces.

The tuna schools come and go from now until January…and we are anxiously awaiting a good tuna bite.

The guys on the 42′ Maverick caught a few big tuna offshore last week.  The fish were in the 80-120 pound range…we all hope that a sign of things to come.  They also picked up a couple marlin and sailfish last week.

The guys on the 32′ Irwin Forbes have been out several days this past week and report a scattered sailfish and mahi mahi bite around the 26 and the corner.

The guys on the 33′ Proline took a guy and his son out over the weekend and they caught a handful of mahi mahi with one over 30 pounds, they caught a handful of jack bottomfishing at the 26 rock and they raised a nice blue marlin in the 300 pound range.

My friends and I have been going out on the Disco Pirate and catching good numbers of roosterfish and jack doing some inshore fishing close to the marina.  The fish are all in the 25-35 pound range.
