February 11, 2010 – Costa Rica Sailfish

The rumors a few days ago of a big bite 45 miles out were true and the bite has been steady out there for the past couple days.  The bigger charter boats and many of the private boats were out there and everyone was raising 10 to 20 sailfish along with a couple mahi mahi per boat.  A couple boats saw marlin and I heard about one boat catching a 500 pound blue.

The boats that can’t get 45 miles out and the boats that did half day trips were fishing the corners and pocket and the full day trips averaged 4 to 8  sailfish bites per day as well as a mahi or two.  The half day trips were doing good if they caught 1 to 3 fish.

The bite moved into 30-35 miles yesterday so hopefully that is a pattern that will continue.

I am working on getting caught up with emails…it’s been a crazy week and today I wasted all day in the local electric company office because my neighbor didn’t pay his electric bill and they accidentally turned off my power instead of his.  It took me 6 hours to get that fixed…oh the joys of Costa Rica.

The above photo is a really fat mahi mahi caught by Dan on the 35′ Bertram recently.
